UTSA blanked by No. 72 Rice on Wednesday

HOUSTON — UTSA saw its two-match winning streak come to an end on Wednesday with a 6-0 setback at No. 72 Rice.

The Roadrunners (10-9) surrendered all six singles points to the Owls (9-11).

Joel Rubio and David Kelleher both took their opponents the distance before falling at Nos. 3 and 5 singles, respectively.

Rubio won his opening frame, but Tommy Bennett rallied to win the final two sets, while Kelleher forced Peter Frank to a third panel after posting a 6-3 win in set two.

Philipp Seifert clinched the match for Rice with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Tyler Brown at the fourth position.

UTSA will host Utah State (5-9, 0-1 WAC) at 1 p.m. on Friday.
