Roadrunners men to open spring campaign at No. 67 TCU on Saturday
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open its 2013 spring campaign on Saturday at No. 67 TCU. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
Coming off of a 13-11 record, the Roadrunners look to exceed last year’s success of reaching the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history and second in the last three seasons.
Third-year head coach Jeff Kader's squad boasts eight returning letterwinners, including seniors Martin Ayala, Tyler Brown and Hugo Guanais.
The Birds' singles contingent is bolstered by the return of sophomores David Kelleher, a first-team All-Southland Conference selection at No. 5 singles a year ago, and Joel Rubio, a second-team all-league pick at the fourth spot.
Freshmen Eric Buchalter, Diogo Casa, Boburjon Kamiljanov, and Matt Mussenden are all newcomers that will provide depth.
The Horned Frogs (1-1) won their season opener on Jan. 19 at Detroit but dropped a 4-3 decision at No. 20 Michigan later in the day. They are slated to play UT Arlington later today.
TCU is led by Arnau Dachs, who is the nation's No. 100-ranked singles player. He has won both of his matches to open the season.
Saturday marks the third all-time meeting between the two teams with the Horned Frogs holding a 2-0 advantage. TCU edged UTSA in the last matchup, 4-3, on March 7, 2009 in Fort Worth.
