Arriaga helps UTSA climb leaderboard at Golfweek Conference Challenge
WOLCOTT, Colo. — Junior Fabiola Arriaga shot a career-best 68 on Tuesday and that helped UTSA move up seven spots on the team leaderboard at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
Arriaga carded eight birdies on the day, which equaled her total through 54 holes at last week’s Dale McNamara Invitational. The Torreon, Mexico, native holed four on each side to break her previous 18-hole best of 69, which she accomplished twice last season (The Alamo Invitational/Challenge at Onion Creek). After starting the day in 29th place, she jumped into a tie for fourth (143=75-68) following her round of four-under-par.
That helped the Roadrunners move into seventh place with a 603 (307-296). UTSA’s second round total of 296 was its best of the fall and the fourth-lowest score of the day. The Birds are just one stroke behind fellow Western Athletic Conference member Denver and two strokes out of the top five.
Senior Paola Valerio fired three birdies en route to a 75 and she is in a tie for 24th place with a 148 (73-75). Meanwhile, junior Taylor Newlin shaved three strokes off of her first-round score and she is tied for 58th at 157 (80-77). Freshman Allie Johnston tied a season-low with a 76 and sits tied for 63rd (158=82-76) and classmate Brogan Townend will enter tomorrow’s final round tied for 75th with a 162 (79-83).
Pepperdine continues to lead the field after a one-over-par 289 brought its 36-hole score to 575 (286-289), while UC Davis’ Demi Runas tops the individual standings with a 138 (71-67) after carding the tournament's best round, a 67.
Wednesday’s final round will commence with a 9:45 a.m. (CT) shotgun start.
