Lackey leads UTSA to fifth-place finish at Border Olympics

LAREDO — Garrison Lackey posted his second top-10 finish of the spring and the UTSA men's golf team placed fifth at the Border Olympics, which concluded Saturday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,375 yards).

Lackey registered a one-over-par 73 in the final round and he finished in a five-way tie for 10th place at two-over 218 (71-74-73). The junior from Weslaco wrote down nine birdies during the 54-hole event, including four on Saturday, in posting his fourth top 10 of his two-year UTSA career.

Brett Hogan was two shots behind Lackey in a tie for 19th after posting a 74 on Saturday to close out a four-over 220 (72, 74-74). The sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, had eight birdies over the two-day tournament.

The Roadrunners saved their best round for last by registering a three-over 291. UTSA was fifth in the 17-team field at 19-over 883 (296-296-291), four shots behind Louisiana-Monroe (879) and five in front of Gonzaga (888).

No. 8 Houston claimed the team crown with a six-under 858 (294-284-280) behind individual medalist Roman Robledo's seven-under 209 (71-68-70). No. 13 Oklahoma was second (859) and No. 30 Baylor took third (863).

UTSA's Bryce Alley posted a 222 (76-70-76) to tie for 30th, Ryan Werre turned in a 227 (77-78-72) to tie for 52nd and J.J. Lindsey was 61st with a 228 (78-78-72). Competing as an individual, Reed Stegall tied for 46th (78-74-74—226).

The Roadrunners will return home to host the Lone Star Invitational from March 24-25 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
