HOUSTON — Bryce Alley, Garrison Lackey and Ryan Werre are all in medalist contention and the UTSA men's golf team is tied for the team lead after 36 holes of the Rice Intercollegiate held Monday at Westwood Golf Club (par 72/7,184 yards).

The defending champion Roadrunners rallied from a slow start to card a two-over-par 290 in the opening round on the strength of a 70 by Lackey and a 72 from both Alley and Werre. That was one shot better than the host Owls' 291.

In the second round of the day, UTSA fired a 291 behind a 71 from Werre, a 72 by Alley and a 74 from Lackey.

Cincinnati made up ground on the Birds with a three-under 285, the top round of the day, and the two teams are tied at five-over 581 with 18 holes remaining on Tuesday. Old Dominion (586), Sam Houston State (592) and Rice (595) round out the top five in the 15-team field.

In the individual standings, Werre is tied with Alex Levy of Rice for third place at one-under 143, two shots behind day-one leader Jared Howard of Cincinnati (72-69—141) and one back of Jamison Randall of Old Dominion (72-70—142). Alley and Lackey are in a four-way tie for fifth at even-par 144.

Brett Hogan is tied for 23rd (76-74—150) and J.J. Lindsey is tied for 63rd (78-78—156) to round out the UTSA lineup.

The third and final round is scheduled to get underway with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
