Tondre wins TGA Public Links Championship stroke play on Thursday
MONTGOMERY — Junior Stanton Tondre fired a three-under-par 68 on Thursday to win the stroke play portion of the Texas Golf Association Public Links Championship at Woodforest Golf Club (par 71/6,953 yards).
The Medina Valley High product carded a one-under 34 on the front nine and toured the back in two-under 34. His round was highlighted by six birdies, three on each side. He edged Michael Smith, who shot a two-under 69, by one stroke and a quartet of golfers that finished at one-under 70.
Tondre now leads a field of 32 players who will compete in the match play portion this weekend. He will face Casey Wharton in the first round on Friday and the winner will play against either Jonathan Marek or Chris Germann at 12:30 p.m. Friday. The quarterfinals and semifinals are slated for Saturday and the final will be contested at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
