SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will travel to McKinney this week to compete at the Southland Conference Championship. The three-day event tees off on Monday at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club (6,304 yards/par 72).

The Roadrunners have registered five top-10 finishes this season, including a season-best fifth-place showing at the Rice Intercollegiate on Feb. 20-21.

Sophomore Ryan Werre, February’s Southland Player of the Month, leads the team with a 73.41 stroke average and has turned in four top-15 finishes, including fourth at the Rice Intercollegiate. The 2011 Southland Freshman of the Year and a third-team all-conference selection tied for third with a 214 (71-69-74) at last year’s conference championship as the only current Roadrunner who played in the tournament.

UTSA has placed seventh at each of the last two conference championships and fourth in each of the two previous league events. The Roadrunners have never won a conference crown, but they have been runners-up five times (1990 in TAAC/1997, 2000, 2003, 2006 in SLC). Two players — Magnus Dohlvik in 1997 and John Elizondo in 2006 — have captured individual crowns.
