CHOUDRANT, La. — Led by an even-par 72 from sophomore Ryan Werre, UTSA is in seventh place after Sunday's opening round of the Argent Financial Classic.
The Roadrunners recorded a 13-over 301 in windy conditions and are just two shots behind Southern Mississippi and Missouri State, who are tied for fifth at 11-over 299. Host Louisiana Tech leads the nine-team field after carding an even-par 288, while No. 20 LSU and No. 46 Middle Tennessee are tied for second at 292. UALR is in fourth (297), while Jacksonville State (303) and Rice (310) round out the standings in eighth and ninth, respectively.
Werre, February's Southland Player of the Month, registered four birdies in his opening 18 holes and finds himself in a seven-way tie for ninth place. That group is one shot back of a quintet tied for fourth place.
LSU's Smylie Kaufman leads the tournament after posting a seven-under 65, followed by Brad Simons of Middle Tennessee (68) and Sang Yi of LSU (70).
Redshirt freshman Martin Board and junior Stanton Tondre are tied for 33rd after turning in four-over 76s, while juniors Mitchell Griffin and Taylor Koser are in 39th (77) and 40th (78), respectively.
The second round of the three-day tournament is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. on Monday.
