LAFAYETTE, La. — Sophomore Ryan Werre tied for 10th place to lead UTSA to 13th in the team standings at the 27th annual Louisiana Classics, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Oakbourne Country Club (par 72/6,898 yards).
Werre began the day at two-under-par 142 after carding rounds of 70 and 72 on Monday. The Redcliff, Alberta, native recorded an even-par 72 to finish in a tie with Memphis’s Grant Milner for 10th place at two-under 214. It marked the second consecutive and fourth career top 10-finish for the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Month.
UTSA recorded a 12-over 300 on Tuesday after carding a 294 and 293, respectively, on Monday. The Birds finished at 23-over 887 for the tournament.
Redshirt freshman Martin Board tied for 44th, recording a one-over 73 after carding rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday. Juniors Mitchell Griffin (226=74-75-77) and Stanton Tondre (231=74-79-78) tied for 61st and 79th, respectively. Junior Taylor Koser tied for 81st at 232 (80-74-78).
No. 25 LSU won the team title by 14 shots with a 17-under 847 (283-279-285) ahead of Tulsa and No. 45 SMU, who each shot a three-under 861. Rounding out the top five were 21st-ranked Kent State (865) and No. 43 Memphis (866). Meanwhile, LSU’s Andrew Presley took the individual title at 10-under 206, edging out teammate Sang Yi by three strokes.
The Roadrunners return to the Bayou State again next week for the Argent Financial Classic. The three-day event is scheduled to begin on Sunday, March 11, in Choudrant, La.
