SAN ANTONIO — Men’s golf signee Stanton Tondre finished second at a U.S. Amateur Public Links Qualifier that was held Monday-Tuesday at Pecan Valley Golf Club.
Tondre, who inked a National Letter of Intent to play for the Roadrunners last fall, fought back from a 2-over-par 75 in the opening round on Monday with a 2-under 69 on Tuesday, which was the best round of the day. He finished second with a 2-over 144 behind current Arizona State player Scott Pinckney, who carded a 1-under 141.
Tondre, a former Medina Valley High standout who earned all-conference accolades at Odessa Junior College the past two seasons, will participate in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, which is slated for June 27-July 2, at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.
UTSA sophomore Mitchell Griffin also competed in the qualifier, placing eighth with a 151 (80-71), while freshman Xabier Basanez finished 29th (86-77=163). Former Roadrunner Luke Healy was 10th (75-76=151).
