Werre remains in title contention at Southland Conference Championship

FORT WORTH — Freshman Ryan Werre remained in title contention and the UTSA men’s golf team stayed fifth after Tuesday's second round of the Southland Conference Championship, which is being played at Waterchase Golf Club (7,304 yards, par 72).
 
The round-one leader after firing a one-under-par 71 on Monday, Werre carded a three-under 69 on Tuesday and is in a tie with UT Arlington’s Wes Worster for second place at four-under 140 after 36 holes. The Redcliff, Alberta, native recorded a pair of birdies on the front nine and eagled the par-five 18th en route to his third sub-70 round of his debut season.
 
Werre is just one stroke behind Mitchell McLeroy of Stephen F. Austin, who moved into sole possession of first place at five-under 139 after turning in a six-under 66 that followed his openingr-ound 73.

Senior Lewis Chong is just three shots behind his freshman teammate, as the Lethbridge, Alberta, native registered a one-under 71 to move into a tie for sixth at one-under 143.
 
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners remained in fifth place in the 10-team field.

UTSA posted a 12-stroke improvement on Monday’s 300 with an even-par 288 and sits 15 shots behind the leader UT Arlington’s 573 (291-282). Southeastern Louisiana is in second at 574 (296-278), followed by Lamar (582=295-287) and Stephen F. Austin (583=296-287).
 
Sophomore Mitchell Griffin recorded a one-over 73 and is tied for 31st at eight-over 152, while sophomore Nicko Dodd turned in a three-over 75 and is tied with sophomore Austin Struble, who carded a 77 Tuesday, at 11-over 155.
 
The final 18 holes are scheduled for Wednesday morning.
