FORT WORTH — Freshman Ryan Werre is in first place and the UTSA men’s golf team stands fifth after the first round of the Southland Conference Championship, which is being played at Waterchase Golf Club (7,304 yards, par 72).

Werre fired a one-under-par 71 on Monday and holds a one-shot lead over a group of eight players, including senior teammate Lewis Chong, who carded even-par 72s. The Redcliff, Alberta, native recorded three birdies on the front nine in going out in 34. Meanwhile, Chong, who hails from Lethbridge, Alberta, also tallied a trio of birdies and matched Werre’s front-nine 34.

Behind Werre and Chong solid opening-day performances, the Roadrunners are in fifth place after turning in a 12-over 300, nine strokes off the pace set by UT Arlington (291). Lamar is in second (295) and Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin are tied for third (296) in the 10-team field.

Sophomore Austin Struble shot a 78 and is tied for 34th, while fellow sophomores Mitchell Griffin and Nicko Dodd are tied for 39th (79) and 41st (80), respectively.

The second round is set to get underway on Tuesday morning.
