Griffin leads Roadrunners on opening day of Morris Williams Intercollegiate

AUSTIN — Playing close to his hometown of Driftwood, UTSA sophomore Mitchell Griffin battled windy conditions on Monday and fired a nine-over-par 153 and is tied for 20th place after the opening day of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate.

Griffin, a Dripping Springs High product, carded rounds of 75 and 78 and his day was highlighted by a pair of birdies on the par-five 11th. He is just four shots out of the top five in the 81-player field with 18 holes remaining on Tuesday.

The Roadrunners are in 14th place with rounds of 324 and 317 for a 36-hole total of 641.

Freshman Ryan Werre is tied for 40th after turning in a 157 (81-76), while senior Lewis Chong (82-84=166) and sophomore Nicko Dodd (87-79=166) are tied for 73rd. Freshman Eddie DeVane is in 80th (86-89=175).

No 13 Texas leads with a 600 (296-304), followed by No. 43 TCU (601), No. 15 Arkansas (604), No. 19 Texas Tech (610) and No. 16 Stanford (611). Tom Hoge of TCU is the individual leader after registering a 141 (73-68).
