UTSA finishes eighth at Wyoming Cowboy Classic
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Led by a 15th-place finish from Bryce Alley, the UTSA men's golf team tied for eighth place at this week's Wyoming Cowboys Classic, which concluded on Tuesday at Talking Stick Golf Club (par 70/7,133 yards).
Alley carded a one-over-par 211 to finish in a tie with Yannik Paul of Colorado for 15th place in the 114-player field. The Longview native posted a 73 in the final round after turning in a 71 and 67 on Monday. The freshman registered a team-high 11 birdies during the 54-hole event and played the par fours at two under (3.94), which was fourth among all players.
After recording a pair of 288s on Monday, the Roadrunners fired a four-over 284 in the final round to jump from 11th into a three-way tie with Gonzaga and Santa Clara for eighth place at 20-over 860 in the 21-team field.
Brett Hogan led the Birds' final-round effort with a one-under 69 behind a trio of birdies, while Garrison Lackey and J.J. Lindsey each pitched in with a 71 to go along with Alley's 73.
Hogan finished in a tie for 46th with an eight-over 218 (75-74-69), while Lackey (73-75-71—219) and Lindsey (70-78-71—219) were one shot back and in a tie for 54th. Ryan Werre was one stroke behind that pair in 59th (74-72-74—220).
No. 11 Oklahoma captured the team title with a nine-under 831 (275-285-271) behind individual winner Michael Gellerman's six-under 204 (66-70-68). The Sooners were followed by 39th-ranked BYU and Colorado (838), Utah (849), UC Davis (857), Kansas State (858) and UC Irvine (859). UTSA finished just ahead of Utah State (866), Idaho (867) and UC Santa Barbara (872).
The Roadrunners will return to the course when they travel to Edmond, Okla., to compete in their first-ever Conference USA Championship from April 27-29.
