UTSA in sixth place after first day of Border Olympics

LAREDO — Led by a one-over-par showing from Garrison Lackey, the UTSA men's golf team is in sixth place after the first day of the Border Olympics, which was played on Friday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,319 yards).

Lackey opened the event with a one-under 71 and followed with a 74, and the junior is in a six-way tie for eighth place with 18 holes remaining. The Weslaco native registered five birdies combined in his two rounds and is eight shots off the pace of seven-under 137 set by Jerry Ruiz of Baylor.

Bryce Alley and Brett Hogan are one shot behind Lackey in a tie for 14th at 145. Alley carded a 76 and a 70, while Hogan posted a 72 and a 74. Ryan Werre and and J.J. Lindsey are tied for 75th (77-78—155) and 77th (78-78—156), respectively.

The Roadrunners turned in a 296 in both rounds and are in sixth at 16-over 592, three shots behind Lamar (589) for a spot in the top five. No. 13 Oklahoma leads the 17-team field at seven-under 569, followed by No. 30 Baylor (572), No. 8 Houston (578) and Louisiana-Monroe (584).

The final round is scheduled for Saturday.
