UTSA inks local pair to National Letters of Intent

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head coach John Knauer announced Monday that he has signed Christian De La Cruz (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson HS) and Zander Lozano (Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas/Boerne Champion HS) to National Letters of Intent. The pair will join the Roadrunners for the 2014-15 season.

“The coaching staff is elated about adding Zander Lozano and Christian De La Cruz to our program,” Knauer said. “We feel the future of UTSA golf is on a trajectory to the top with their additions. Both Zander and Christian are highly-ranked players with tremendous national tournament experience. This experience will be very helpful in their transition to collegiate golf.”

Two-time second-team Class 5A all-state selection … named first-team all-region in 2011 and 2012 and second-team all-region in 2013 … three-time all-district performer, including first team as a freshman and junior … two-time member of the San Antonio Express-News Super Team … won the North East I.S.D. Texas Shootout in 2010 and 2011 … captured the 2012 Fall State Preview crown with a 72-70—142 … qualified for the 2011 and 2012 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 2011 Callaway Junior World Championship and the 2011 Junior PGA … posted three wins on the 2011 Texas Junior Golf Tour, including a 68-71—139 to claim the Texas Junior Masters/World Junior Qualifier at Brackenridge Golf Course.

Two-time Class 4A state qualifier and honorable mention all-state selection … three-time district and regional qualifier … runner up at the 2012 Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) Junior World Golf Championship Qualifier with a 66-69-71—206 … named to the 2012-13 All-TJGT Team … qualified for the 2013 Callaway Junior Golf Championships … played in the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur … member of the U.S. National Junior Golf Team, where he won all three rounds of a match play competition to help the Americans defeat Scotland in June 2013 at Carnoustie … shot a 68-72—140 to tie for sixth at the 2013 Texas Junior Masters/Junior World Qualifier … rated the No. 69 high school recruit in the nation by Golfweek.
