HENDERSON, Nev. — J.J. Lindsey is in first place and UTSA sits in third after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Championship, which began on Monday at Rio Secco Golf Club (par 72/7,313 yards).

Lindsey stormed out to the individual lead after recording birdies on his first four holes en route to a six-under-par 30 on the front nine. The freshman from Adkins double-bogeyed the par-four 11th and settled for a 39 on the back and a 69 for the day. He holds a one-shot lead over a group of four players, including sophomore teammate Garrison Lackey, with 36 holes remaining.

Meanwhile, Lackey fired a two-under 70 on the strength of a 33 on the back nine that was highlighted by five of his six birdies on the day. He joins New Mexico State's Derek Baade and Willy Hogan and Louisiana Tech's Victor Lange in a tie for second on the individual leaderboard.

Behind Lindsey and Lackey's strong opening rounds, the Roadrunners carded a five-over 293 and are in third place in the team standings, one stroke behind Utah State (292) and seven behind day one leader New Mexico State (286). UT Arlington and Idaho are one stroke behind UTSA at 294, followed by San Jose State (296), Seattle (297), Denver (300), Texas State (302) and Louisiana Tech (305).

"We got off to a hot start with J.J. leading the way," head coach John Knauer said. "We started leaking oil in the middle of the round, but we finished with seven birdies down the stretch to get right back in the hunt after the first 18 holes. I'm very proud of how our guys hung in there today and I can't wait to tee it up in the morning."

Ryan Werre is tied for 23rd after turning in a three-over 75, while Brett Hogan is tied for 42nd (79) and Stanton Tondre is in 50th (81) to round out the UTSA lineup.

The second round is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. (CT) on Tuesday.
