Roadrunners in fifth place after two rounds of Border Olympics

LAREDO — Led by a pair of even-par rounds from Ryan Werre, the UTSA men’s golf team is in a tie for fifth place after the first two rounds of the Border Olympics, which teed off on Friday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,319 yards).

The Roadrunners carded a four-over-par 292 in both rounds and are in a tie with Lamar for fifth at eight-over 584 in the 14-team field. No. 37 Baylor and Central Arkansas share the lead at three-over 579, followed by 33rd-ranked Houston (581) and No. 35 Oklahoma (582).

Werre wrote down seven birdies during his two rounds and is in a five-way tie for ninth place in the individual standings. Central Arkansas' James Newton fired a nine-under 135 (70-65) and he holds a six-shot lead on the field.

Brett Hogan is two shots behind his teammate after carding a 146 (70-76), which is good for a tie for 15th. J.J. Lindsey is tied for 33rd (77-72—149), Stanton Tondre is tied for 47th (73-78—151) and Garrison Lackey is in 51st (80-72—152).

The final 18 holes will be played on Saturday morning.
