UTSA to compete at Border Olympics this weekend
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to the course this weekend when it travels to Laredo to compete at the Border Olympics. The two-day event is slated to tee off on Friday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,125 yards).
The Roadrunners will compete against No. 37 Baylor, Central Arkansas, No. 33 Houston (host), Lamar, McNeese State, Northern Colorado, No. 35 Oklahoma, Rice, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, UT Arlington and Washington State. The field will play 36 holes on Friday, followed by 18 on the following day.
UTSA is coming off a 13th-place finish at the Louisiana Classics, which was contested from March 4-5. Ryan Werre paced the Birds with a 228 (76-79-73) to tie for 48th. The junior leads the team and ranks seventh in the Western Athletic Conference with a 73.33 stroke average this season and he has turned in six under-par rounds, including four in the 60s. Stanton Tondre is close behind with a 73.79 average and four under-par rounds. UTSA’s team scoring average of 294 stands third in the league.
The Roadrunners finished 14th at last year’s Border Olympics behind a 23rd-place effort from Werre.
