FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — All-American Keyunta Hayes advanced to the national semifinals in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday night to highlight the UTSA men's track & field team's day of action at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds.

Hayes, who came into the meet with the nation's second-fastest time of the season, placed second in the third and final quarterfinal heat of the evening to earn an automatic berth in the next round of competition. The Tyler native clocked his second-best time of the campaign, 49.75, and that was good for fourth in the field of 24 hurdlers. The national semis are scheduled to be contested at 8:15 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday, June 11, at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and the eight-man final will take place two days later.

Jurmarcus Shelvin and All-American Joshua Smith ran in the same heat as their teammate, but the pair was unable to move on. Shelvin raced to a 51.30, which was 17th, while Smith was one spot back following his 51.46.

Meanwhile, Nate Brunette competed in a pair of races during the second day of the meet.

The senior started his night with a wind-aided season-best mark of 10.40 in the 100m, but he was unable to advance following his 17th-place effort.

However, Brunette bounced back 90 minutes later to earn a spot in Saturday's 200m quarterfinals after crossing the finish line in 21.14, which was good for 20th in the field of 48 sprinters.

Other Roadrunners who saw action on Friday but saw their season come to an end included All-American Keith Benford (high jump/t-18th/6-11 ½/2.12m) Jonas Gutierrez (110m hurdles/34th/14.39), James Johnson (200m/42nd/21.78) and Phil Steinert (hammer/27th/192-8/58.73m).

The three-day meet will conclude on Saturday.
