Garrett Jr. named Conference USA Athlete of the Week for third time this spring on Tuesday
IRVING — Richard Garrett Jr. was named Conference USA Co-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. It marked the senior All-American's second consecutive weekly honor and third in just six weeks this spring. He shared this week's award with Louisiana Tech sprinter Trey Hadnot.
The Garland native had another strong meet at last Saturday's J. Fred Duckett Twilight in Houston by winning the two events in which he was entered.
Garrett Jr. opened the day with a measurement of 176-4 (53.76m) to top the field of 31 discus throwers. It marked his second victory of the season and fourth top-two performance in the event.
The 6-foot, 275-pounder went on to break his program record in the shot put for the second time this year. His mark of 64-6 (19.66m) not only added two-and-three-quarter inches to his previous best established at the UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational, but it was his fourth gold medal of the spring in his specialty event.
He ranks seventh nationally in the shot and leads C-USA in both that and the discus (183-9/56.00m).
The Roadrunners now have collected a total of four Athlete of Week awards this season, as Keyunta Hayes was honored back on April 8.
UTSA returns home on Friday for the Roadrunners Invitational. The one-day meet will be this spring's final meet at the brand new Park West Athletics Complex and the team's final tune-up for the Conference USA Championships, which are scheduled for May 15-18.
