Garrett Jr., Reed lead No. 22 UTSA at Saturday's Texas Invitational
AUSTIN — Richard Garrett Jr. and Taylor Reed helped lead 22nd-ranked UTSA to a fourth-place finish at Saturday's Texas Invitational.
Garrett Jr. won the first hammer title of his career following his winning toss of 194-9 (59.37m). That topped the field of 11 throwers and was nearly 20 feet better than his nearest competitor.
Meanwhile, Reed cleared 17-5 (5.31m) en route to a sixth-place finish in the pole vault and that was his second program record this spring. The mark added two-and-a-quarter inches to the previous standard he established at the season-opening Islanders Open.
The Roadrunners also received second-place performances from Jurmarcus Shelvin in the 400-meter hurdles (52.21) and Ronson Small in the triple jump (48-1 ¾/14.67m).
UTSA scored 60 points at the one-day meet despite not sending a full squad and it finished behind No. 16 Texas (184), Houston (124) and Texas State (91).
The Roadrunners will return home next Saturday, April 19, for the UTSA Invitational.
