Hayes tabbed Conference USA Athlete of the Week on Tuesday
IRVING — Keyunta Hayes was named Conference USA Athlete of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The All-American from Tyler raced to the nation's fastest 400-meter hurdles time on Friday at the Pepsi Florida Relays. One week after clocking the country's second-best time (50.36) at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, Hayes circled the Percy Beard Track in 49.59 on his way to a fourth-place finish in the field of 48 hurdlers, but he finished as the top collegian in his specialty event. The second-best time of his illustrious career was 21 hundredths of a second shy of his personal record of 49.38 established at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
Hayes also recorded a 13.97 in a 14th-place performance in the 110m hurdles on Friday in addition to running the second leg of the squad's 1,600m relay that passed the baton in 3:13.21 the following evening.
It marks the program's second honoree in the last three weeks, as fellow All-American Richard Garrett Jr. was recognized on March 25.
UTSA will return to action on Saturday at the Texas Invitational in Austin.
