NEW YORK CITY — Senior All-American Richard Garrett Jr. placed second in the shot put championship division with a school-record performance to lead the UTSA men's track & field team at this weekend's Armory Collegiate Invitational.

Garrett Jr. shattered his two-year-old program mark with a measurement of 62-11 ¾ (19.18m) on Friday night. That added more than one foot and three inches to his previous personal best established at the 2011 Southland Conference Championships and he now stands eighth on the national leaderboard. Texas' Hayden Baillio won the 49-man event with a put of 63-7 ¾ (19.40m).

Junior Mike Medrano also earned a silver medal, his coming in the mile. The Mission native clocked a PR of 4:11.89 (No. 3 on UTSA's all-time performers list) and trailed only Villanova's Dusty Solis (4:07.03) in the 63-man field. His mark was nearly a three-second improvement from his previous career best and it currently leads the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) standings.

The Roadrunners also recorded a pair of podium finishes in the relays.

The distance medley quartet of juniors Nathan Collier, Johnathan Jones, Brady Hand and Medrano placed second in a season-best 10:02.82 (third-best time in program annals) on Friday night. Meanwhile, the 1,600m foursome of freshman Jumarcus Shelvin, sophomore Christopher Hall, senior Darryl Wyrick and junior Joshua Smith went on to post a third-place effort on Saturday in 3:17.38.

Senior Taylor Reed matched his UTSA record in pole vault with a clearance of 17-0 ¾ (5.20m). That was good for 10th place in the championship flight.

The Roadrunners will take the next two weeks off before competing at the WAC Championships from Feb. 21-23 in Albuquerque, N.M.
