Benford victorious at Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational
COLLEGE STATION — All-America high jumper Keith Benford recorded his second victory in as many meets to open his senior campaign to highlight UTSA at Saturday's Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational.
Benford cleared a meet-record 7-1 ¾ (2.18m) for the eighth gold medal of his illustrious career. The mark was an inch-and-a-quarter better than his winning performance at last month's season-opening Texas A&M Reveille Invitational.
The Roadrunners added a pair of runner-up showings in field competition.
Senior All-American Richard Garrett Jr. placed second in the shot put with a measurement of 60-1 (18.31m), while classmate Phil Steinert nabbed a silver medal in the weight throw (61-11 ¾/18.89m).
Senior Daniel Balbontin was UTSA's top runner, as he posted a third-place effort in 3,000 meters. Balbontin clocked a 8:38.75 in the first 3k of his career.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Friday, Jan. 18, at the Leonard Hilton Memorial in Houston.
