AUSTIN/SAN ANTONIO — Sophomore Richard Garrett Jr. and Phil Steinert broke UTSA's discus and hammer throw records, respectively, and four Roadrunners won gold medals at a pair of meets this week.

Garrett Jr. launched the platter 178-1 (54.29m) on Friday en route to a second-place performance in the B section of the university/college division of the 84th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. That was nearly five feet better than his previous personal best and it broke Ole Gran's 25-year-old mark of 177-3 (54.03m). The Garland native now resides in second place on the Southland Conference leaderboard.

Meanwhile, Steinert tossed the implement 196-3 (59.81m) en route to an 11th-place finish in the university/college division on Thursday. The Round Rock native improved his previous record by three feet, eight inches and he currently ranks second in the league standings.

Freshman Keyunta Hayes moved to the lead in the conference after recording the third-best 400-meter hurdles performance in program history. The Tyler native raced to a 51.91 in the eighth university division preliminary heat on Thursday and he went on to finish seventh (52.30) in Saturday's final.

On Wednesday night, senior Brandon Chiuminetta won the B flight of the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:34.86.

UTSA also saw three of its athletes win Friday at the local Trinity Tigers Relays.

Sophomore Tyler Williamson broke the sand in a season-long 24-1 ½ (7.35m) for the long jump title, while freshman Cameron Courtney clocked a career-best 4:00.95 in the 1,500m. Junior Isah Muhammed completed the trifecta of first-place finishes with his season-best 55.16 in the 400m hurdles.

The Roadrunners return to action next weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays and Texas State Invitational.
