Garrett Jr. named Conference USA Field Performer of the Meet on Thursday
IRVING — Richard Garrett Jr. was named Conference USA Field Performer of the Meet, the league office announced on Thursday.
The senior All-American scored a total of 24 points in leading UTSA to the team title in its first year as a member of C-USA. The Roadrunners racked up a program-record 172 to easily defeat defending champion UTEP by 36.
Garrett Jr. captured the circuit's shot put and discus crowns and added a fifth-place performance in the hammer in his final outdoor conference meet at UTSA.
The 6-foot, 275-pounder led a trio of Roadrunners shot putters that combined for 22 points on Sunday. The league leader entering the weekend won his specialty event with a meet-record measurement of 65-9 ¾ (20.06m). His third consecutive school record added three-and-a-half inches to his previous standard from two weeks ago and he now owns the nation's seventh-longest mark this season.
Garrett Jr., who also led the conference in the discus entering the meet, picked up the program's first title in its new home with his program-record toss of 188-5 (57.44m) on Saturday. Nearly 12 feet better than his closest competitor, he led a parade of 25 points for the Roadrunners.
The Garland native registered a throw of 179-6 (54.71m) en route to fifth place in the hammer on Friday.
UTEP's Anthony Rotich, who won the 1,500 meters, 5k and 3,000m steeplechase, was tabbed C-USA's Track Performer of the Meet.
UTSA will return to action next weekend at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds in Fayetteville, Ark. The three-day meet is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 29.
