Medrano, Garrett Jr. sweep Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week awards
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Junior Mike Medrano and senior All-American Richard Garrett Jr. were named Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Medrano raced to a runner-up performance in the mile last Saturday at the Armory Collegiate Invitational. The Mission native clocked a personal-record 4:11.89 (No. 3 on UTSA's all-time performers list) and trailed only Villanova's Dusty Solis (4:07.03) in the 63-man field. His mark was nearly a three-second improvement from his previous career best and it currently leads the WAC standings. He also anchored the Roadrunners' second-place distance medley relay that registered a conference-leading and season-best time of 10:02.82 (third-fastest in program history) on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Garrett Jr. shattered his two-year-old program record in the shot put with a measurement of 62-11 ¾ (19.18m) on Friday in the Big Apple. That added more than one foot and three inches to his previous personal best established at the 2011 Southland Conference Championships and he now stands in ninth place on the national leaderboard (second WAC). Texas' Hayden Baillio won the 49-man event with a put of 63-7 ¾ (19.40m).
UTSA has the next weekends off before competing at the WAC Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. The three-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Feb. 21.
