Arriaga finishes second at Golfweek Conference Challenge
WOLCOTT, Colo. — Junior Fabiola Arriaga carded a three-under-par 69 on Wednesday and she finished the Golfweek Conference Challenge in a tie for second place with a program-record-tying score of 212 (75-68-69).
Aided by her fourth career round in the 60s, Arriaga tied the program standard established by Paola Valerio at the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Championship. A day after shooting a career-low 68, the Torreon, Mexico, native shot three-under-par on the back nine and added a pair of birdies on the front side to bring her tournament total to 17. Arriaga notched her second consecutive top-five finish to start the fall campaign and it marked the eighth such showing of her career.
Meanwhile, Valerio carded a 226 (73-75-78) to tie for 32nd and junior Taylor Newlin’s 232 (80-77-75) was good for a 52nd-place tie. Freshman Allie Johnston (237=82-76-79) closed out her collegiate debut in a tie for 66th and classmate Brogan Townend (241=79-83-79) finished 73rd.
The Roadrunners turned in a three-round total of 904 (307-296-301) to place seventh in the 18-team field, ahead of East Tennessee State (906), UCLA (914) and Florida State (915). Pepperdine took home the championship with an 860 (286-289-285), while UC Davis' Demi Runas claimed individual medalist honors with a 209 (71-67-71).
UTSA will be back in action in two-and-a-half weeks when it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Mercedes-Benz Championship. The three-day tournament tees off on Friday, Oct. 12.
