Roadrunners register half dozen podium finishes at J. Fred Duckett Twilight
HOUSTON — UTSA registered a half dozen podium finishes — five silver medals and a bronze — at Saturday's J. Fred Duckett Twilight.
Samantha Fish (3,000m steeplechase), Whitney Flannel (high jump), Emily Perez (5k), Grace Williamson (800m) and the 1,600m quartet of Kelly Goudeau, Venessa Onwuchekwa, Kaila James and Evelyn Clark each recorded runner-up performances, while Onwuchekwa added a third-place effort in the 400m hurdles.
Fish raced to a career-best time of 10:51.02, which was more than five seconds faster than her previous personal record, and the senior from Los Fresnos moved up to third on the Conference USA leaderboard.
Meanwhile, Flannel cleared 5-8 ¾ (1.75m) for her third consecutive top-two finish and fifth overall this season.
Perez shattered her PR en route to a runner-up showing in the second 5,000 meters race of her two-year career. The sophomore from Mission crossed the finish line in 17:16.88 and that shaved nearly 32 seconds of her previous best.
Williamson clocked a season-best 2:12.13 in her second-place performance in the 800m.
Onwuchekwa circled the Holloway Track Complex oval in a personal-record 1:01.16 in her specialty event before helping lead the Roadrunners' mile relay to a silver medal in 3:45.15.
UTSA will return home next Friday, May 2, for the Roadrunners Invitational. The one-day meet will be this spring's final meet at the brand new Park West Athletics Complex and the team's final tune-up for the Conference USA Championships, which are scheduled for May 15-18.
