Mecke advances to NCAA Championships quarterfinals on Thursday
AUSTIN — Senior Dana Mecke advanced to the national quarterfinals of the 800-meter run on Thursday to highlight the UTSA women's track & field team's opening day of action at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Mecke circled the oval two times in 2:08.24 en route to a third-place finish in the night's second first-round heat. That performance automatically qualified the Bulverde native for the next round, the second such appearance of her illustrious career, and it is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Her time ranked 16th in the field of 48 middle distance runners.
Four other Roadrunners were in action during the first day, but the quartet was unable to move on.
Junior Zaquita McClanahan finished in a 27th-place tie in the shot put with the second-best mark of her career (48-11 34/14.93m). The Southland Conference Champion recorded the measurement on her first attempt of the afternoon.
Meanwhile, sophomore Greneshia Wright leaped to a 30th-place tie in the long jump with a wind-aided distance of 19-4 (5.89m).
Sophomore Jhorden Hunter (11.81) and Southland Freshman of the Year Shahira Ehiemua (13.13) placed 40th and 47th, respectively, in the 100m to round out the UTSA contingent. The duo was coming off a 1-2 finish at the Southland Championships two weeks ago.
The three-day meet continues on Friday.
