HOUSTON — Sophomore Katie Bragg and freshman April Benavidez opened the UTSA women's track & field team's outdoor campaign with school records at this weekend's Victor Lopez Classic.

Bragg defeated Rice's Tina Robinson by two feet, nine inches to win the second gold medal of her young career. The Peachtree City, Ga., native hurled the implement 172-4 (52.52m) to break her previous career best by 10 inches.

Meanwhile, Benavidez added another line to her alreaddy-impressive resume with her 11-5 ¾ (3.50m) clearance in the pole vaiult. That measurement matched the standard established by Brooke Townzen at this meet a year ago.

Freshman Nina Herrera picked up a gold medal in the 1,500 meters (section A) after breaking the tape in 4:37.37. She edged McNeese State's Amy Talbot by one second.

The quartet of senior Shavonne Armbrister, freshmen Krystal Wynn and Grace Williamson and sophomore Briony Miller won the 1,600m relay after circling the Holloway Field/Ley Track four times in 3:48.11. They defeated Texas Southern by nearly five-and-a-half seconds for UTSA's third win of the weekend.

Sophomore Jessica Bitterly clocked a personal best en route to a second-place performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Baytown native shaved five seconds off her previous PR, which was recorded at last year's Southland Conference Championships.

Williamson placed second in the 800m but finished as the top collegian. The Houston native crossed the line in 2:14.55, while Herrera was fourth in 2:16.00.

UTSA returns to action on Friday, April 1, at the Trinity Alumni Classic.
