SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will open its ninth season of play with a pair of matches against Southland Conference opponents this weekend. The Roadrunners will host Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. on Friday at Park West Athletics Complex before heading east for a 6:30 p.m. matchup at Sam Houston State on Sunday.

The Roadrunners are coming off a 2-0 win over Incarnate Word, another Southland opponent, last Sunday in their lone exhibition match. Senior Kaytee O’Brien supplied the offense for UTSA with a pair of goals on just three shots for the night. Sophomore Katherine Tesno got the start in goal against the Cardinals and recorded a clean sheet with three saves. Eight newcomers saw action in the friendly, including starts for freshmen Makayla Schmidt and Kaja Skare along with junior Savannah Struck.

The Huskies dropped a 1-0 exhibition contest to Texas State on Aug. 16 in San Marcos. Picked to finish seventh in the league by Southland head coaches, Houston Baptist returns 15 letterwinners and nine starters from last year’s team that went 5-12-2 overall and 4-7-1 in conference action. The squad is led by senior forward Natalie Hager, who earned preseason second-team all-conference laurels after she registered two goals and three assists a season ago.

Sam Houston State will host Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday night before welcoming the Roadrunners to town. The Bearkats played a pair of exhibition matches and dropped a 1-0 decision at Baylor before coming away with a 2-2 draw at Houston. Selected by league coaches to finish third, Sam Houston State is led by Mariah Titus, who was a preseason all-conference pick after she tallied eight goals a season ago. In all, the Bearkats return 18 letterwinners and 10 starters from last season’s 9-11-1 team.

On Friday, UTSA will look to improve on a 2-6 all-time mark in season openers and 2-1 record against Houston Baptist. The Huskies were victorious in the last meeting, 1-0, to open the 2012 campaign in Houston.

Meanwhile, the Roadrunners are 7-2 all-time against Sam Houston State, including a 3-0 mark in Huntsville. UTSA won the last matchup, 1-0, on Aug. 30, 2013, in San Antonio.
