SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will host Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. on Sunday in an exhibition match at Park West Athletics Complex. It will be the lone exhibition contest for the Roadrunners before officially opening their ninth season of play on Friday, Aug. 22 against Houston Baptist.

Entering its second season as a member of Conference USA, UTSA returns 13 letterwinners, nine starters and 86 percent of its offense from last season’s squad. Among the returners is preseason All-C-USA selection Emma Makela, who appeared in all 19 matches with 18 starts in goal for the Roadrunners in 2013. The sophomore was a second-team all-conference pick and earned a spot on the league’s all-freshman team a season ago after racking up 90 saves, which ranked third in C-USA. Interim head coach Greg Sheen also welcomes back the team’s top five goal scorers, including seniors Anissa Munson and Happy Orere-Amadu, who each collected three winners last fall.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals lost four starters, but return nine players who scored at least one goal plus their top two goalkeepers from last season’s team that went 10-6-3 overall and 4-5-3 in Southland Conference action. Incarnate Word recently was selected by the Southland’s coaches to finish 10th, while the league’s sports information directors tabbed the Cardinals to finish 11th.

The two teams have not met during regular season play, but this will be the second consecutive year that they have played a friendly. Last season, the Cardinals and Roadrunners christened the new Park West Athletics Complex in front of 1,117 fans in a match that resulted in a 2-1 victory for the visitors.
