Roadrunners women win three gold medals at UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — The women's track & field team received winning performances from Ernestine Cray, Samantha Fish and Nina Herrera and the Roadrunners finished in third place at this weekend's UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational. which was the program's first home meet in 19 years.

Cray leaped to a measurement of 19-2 (5.84m) in the long jump, which was nearly five inches better than Texas Tech's Gionna Jackson. The senior from San Antonio went on to place third in the triple jump with her mark of 40-3 ½ (12.28m).

Samantha Fish also was victorious following her time of 11:12.20 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which was 25-and-a-half seconds faster than her nearest competitor.

Nina Herrera picked up the team's other gold medal in the metric mile. The senior from El Paso defeated Texas Tech's Sharlene Nickle by more than a second in her first 1,500m race of the campaign.

The Roadrunners, who added another 10 podium finishes at the two-day meet, finished third in the team standings with 142.5 points. Texas Tech won the team title with 197.5, while Texas A&M was second with 147.

UTSA will be back in action at a pair of meets next week. The Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays are scheduled for March 26-29, while the Trinity Tigers Relays are slated for Friday, March 28.
