Oseghae leads UTSA to six gold medals at season-opening Country Inn & Suites Islanders Open
CORPUS CHRISTI — Laura Oseghae picked up two of UTSA's six gold medals at Saturday's season-opening Country inn & Suites Islanders Open.
The senior out of San Antonio broke the sand in 18-10 ½ (5.75m) in winning the long jump by more than five inches. She then skipped to a career-long measurement of 39-10 (12.14m) en route to a three-and-a-quarter-inch triumph in the triple jump.
Meanwhile, Whitney Flannel easily collected a gold medal in the high jump with a personal-record clearance of 5-10 (1.78m), which was nearly five inches better than her nearest competitor.
The Roadrunners' other three winners were April Benavidez (pole vault/11-11 ¾/3.65m), Katelynn Homb (discus/134-1/40.88m) and Angel Sifuentes (javelin/138-4/42.17m). Sifuentes' mark was the third-best performance in program history.
All told, UTSA added 11 other podium finishes at the one-day meet.
The Roadrunners will return to action next weekend when it hosts the two-day UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational at the Park West Athletics Complex. The program's first home meet since 1995 is scheduled to get underway on Friday, March 21.
