SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams will open their outdoor season on Saturday when they travel to the Coastal Bend for the Country Inn & Suites Islanders Open.

The one-day meet, which will take place at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer & Track Stadium, is scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m. with the early-morning distance events (3,000m/3,000m steeplechase) and it will run until 4:30 p.m. (click here for the complete meet schedule). All told, there will be 20 events contested and the Roadrunners will face athletes from host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Incarnate Word, Texas-Pan American, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas Southern and Trinity.

The UTSA women are coming off a second-place finish at the Conference USA Indoor Championships two weeks ago. The Roadrunners were led by their league championship distance medley relay of Nina Herrera, Evelyn Clark, Grace Williamson and Emily Perez, who passed the baton in 11:39.86 for the 58th individual/relay conference title in school annals.

Meanwhile, the men were paced by champions Andrew Akens (shot put) and the DMR of Mike Medrano, Jurmarcus Shelvin, Brady Hand and Nathan Collier. Joshua Smith is back for his senior campaign after earning second-team All-America honors in the 400-meter hurdles a year ago. UTSA also welcomes back nine athletes that redshirted last season, including All-Americans Keith Benford, Richard Garrett Jr., Keyunta Hayes and Tyler Williamson, as well as Nate Brunette, Medrano, Taylor Reed, Ronson Small and Phil Steinert.
