Cray finishes second in long jump at Howie Ryan Invitational & Multis
HOUSTON — Ernestine Cray placed second in the long jump on Saturday to lead the UTSA women's track & field team at this weekend's Howie Ryan Invitational & Multis.
The senior from San Antonio broke the sand in a career-long 19-7 (5.97m) to finish as the top collegian in the field of 20 jumpers. That was an inch-and-a-half improvement from her previous best of 19-5 ½ (5.93m) established at the season-opening Texas A&M Reveille Invitational and it is just two inches shy of the top mark in Conference USA this season. Cray now has finished third or better in all three meets she has competed in this year.
Meanwhile, Nina Herrera just missed a podium finish after crossing the line fourth in the 800 meters. She clocked a personal-best time of 2:13.77, which was three-and-a-half seconds faster than her pervious best set three weeks ago at the Houston Opener.
UTSA will return to action next weekend at the Armory Collegiate Invitational in New York City. The two-day meet is scheduled to get underway on Friday, Feb. 7, at the historic 168th Street Armory in upper Manhattan.
