Roadrunners to return to action this weekend at Bobcats Classic
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will travel to San Marcos for the third time this season this weekend when it competes at the Bobcats Classic. The two-day meet is scheduled to begin on Friday at the Texas State Track & Field Complex and it will be the teams' final tune-up for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships, which will be contested from May 8-11 in Arlington.
The event, which gets underway with the hammer and discus on the opening day (click here to view the entire meet schedule), will feature seven other teams in addition to the the Roadrunners and host Bobcats. Texas A&M's top-ranked women's squad and No. 2 men's club, Houston, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, Northwestern, SMU and UTEP comprise the remainder of the field.
The UTSA men posted a half dozen podium finishes last Saturday at a pair of meets (Longhorns Invitational & J. Fred Duckett Twilight). Roscoe Robinson continues to lead the WAC standings in the long jump and he ranks eighth on the national leaderboard (25-9 ¼/7.85m). The Roadrunners currently reside atop the league rankings in two other events (Kerry Thompson, high jump/1,600m relay), while Joshua Smith ranks second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.44 and that is good for 20th in the country.
The women received winning performances from six athletes last Saturday and that pushed the squad's season total to 16. Ernestine Cray owns a league-leading measurement of 42-2 ¾ (12.87m) the triple jump and that ranks 19th nationally. Alyssa Diaz also sits atop the WAC standings in the 10,000 meters (35:24.07).
