Soza named Conference USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday
IRVING — Eric Soza was named Conference USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Soza matched a career-high with 30 completions (in 49 attempts) for 274 yards and he scored a pair of second-half rushing touchdowns, as UTSA remained alive for the West Division title with Saturday's 21-13 victory at North Texas. The Beeville native crossed the goal line from two yards out in the third quarter to cap a nine-play, 75-yard drive and later ran it in from 10 yards to finish off another 75-yard scoring march in the final stanza. Soza, who also led the Roadrunners to a program-record 14 third-down conversions (in 20 attempts), connected with 11 different receivers on the day and finished the team's fourth consecutive win with 36 rushing yards on his 10 carries.
East Carolina quarterback Shane Carden shared this week's award with Soza, while Tulsa linebacker Shawn Jackson was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week and Tulane place-kicker Cairo Santos was the special teams honoree.
UTSA (6-5, 5-2 C-USA) will wrap up regular season play on Saturday when it hosts Louisiana Tech (4-7, 3-4 C-USA) at 2:30 p.m. The Roadrunners can advance to the conference's Dec. 7 championship game with a victory combined with a Rice loss against Tulane.
