Budweiser Clydesdales to lead Saturday's UTSA Football Spirit Walk

SAN ANTONIO — The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales will lead the UTSA Football Spirit Walk prior to Saturday's game against Tulane.

The Spirit Walk will begin at approximately 10:20 a.m. at the corner of East Commerce Street and Hoefgen Avenue and will proceed through Sunset Station to the Alamodome North Plaza. The Budweiser Clydesdales will remain in the North Plaza for photo opportunities until noon. Kickoff between the Roadrunners and the Green Wave is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The Budweiser Clydesdales are an eight-horse “hitch” used for promotions and commercials by the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company. They first were introduced to the public in 1933 to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition. Since then, the massive animals pulling a red, white and gold beer wagon have toured the world. Television advertising featuring the Budweiser Clydesdales has been a long-standing Super Bowl tradition with their first ad during Super Bowl XX in 1986.

To qualify for one of the hitches, a Budweiser Clydesdale must be a gelding with an even temperament and strong draft horse appearance, at least four years old, stand at least 18 hands (72 inches) at the withers when fully mature and weigh between 1,800-2,300 pounds. They are in the Alamo City this week appearing at an Anheuser-Busch distributor convention. Silver Eagle, the local Anheuser-Busch distributor, is a sponsor of UTSA Athletics and is responsible for arranging the appearance at the Spirit Walk.
