SAN ANTONIO
Head coach Larry Coker has built community service into the foundation of the UTSA Football program. On Wednesday, Dec. 16, team members and the coaching staff delivered clothing to Haven for Hope.  While they brought nearly a dozen bags with them, the extra hands and gift of time were much greater contributions.

The team spent more than two hours moving gifts from storage to a classroom, sorting loads of presents and bicycles, then meeting the recipient families in person.

“It’s great to see the UTSA football team because they’re new to the community and it’s nice to see them taking an active role in the community,” said Greg Matula of NuStar Energy, a spokesman for Haven for Hope. “We’re pleased not only to have a good team, but a team based on good character.”

Matula said there currently are 80 families in residence at the facility, which account for more than 175 children. Each of those children received gifts.

“We’re here to give back to the people who don’t have the same opportunity as everyone else does during Christmas,” freshman running back David Glasco said. “Everybody deserves to be happy during this time of year. Giving back to them makes us all feel good as a program.”

Haven for Hope is a private non-profit aimed at transforming the lives of homeless men, women and children in the San Antonio/Bexar County area. Partnering with 78 governmental, non-profit and faith-based agencies, Haven for Hope seeks to transform the lives of the homeless by addressing the root causes of homelessness through education, job training and behavioral health services. While most “shelters” feed, clothe and shelter the homeless, Haven for Hope and its partners will provide critical social services to help the homeless become self-sufficient individuals on a long-term basis.
