UTSA tied for third after opening round of Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Senior Paola Valerio and junior Taylor Newlin shot even-par 72s and UTSA is tied for third place following Friday's opening round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships.
The Roadrunners, who recorded their lowest round of the fall with a 292, are tied with No. 27 Tennessee and the pair is just one stroke behind 23rd-ranked Texas A&M and No. 31 Penn State for the top spot on the leaderboard.
The entire top 10 is separated by fewer than 10 strokes with No. 26 Purdue (293), Florida State (294), No. 10 Northwestern (294), Mississippi State (297), No. 14 Iowa State (298) and Furman (300) trailing UTSA.
Valerio and Newlin closed the day tied for eighth place.
Valerio produced a clean scorecard with 18 pars, while Newlin offset a pair of bogeys with birdies on Nos. 7 and 14.
Junior Chelsea Bretcher was not far behind with a career-low round of 73 to tie for 12th. The Austin native shot even-par before two bogeys and a birdie on No. 14. Meanwhile, junior Fabiola Arriaga carded a 75 with a birdie on No. 4 to tie for 31st, while freshman Brogan Townend shot an 85 to tie for 86th.
Freshman Allie Johnston, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 63rd after firing a 79.
Northwestern's Hana Lee leads the field after shooting a three-under-par 69.
UTSA will tee off from hole No. 1 starting at 8:50 a.m. (CT) on Saturday.
