Roadrunners to compete at pair of meets this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to action this weekend when it competes at a pair of meets. The Roadrunners will send a contingent of 22 athletes (14 women/eight men) to the four-day Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, which began on Wednesday in Austin with multi-event competition, and the remainder of the squads will stay in town for Friday's Trinity Tigers Relays.

UTSA will begin competition at the 86th annual Texas Relays on Thursday evening and it also will have athletes competing on the final two days of action at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Making the trek north for the women are Isabel Balbontin (5,000m), Katie Bragg (hammer), Alyssa Diaz (10,000m), Shahira Ehiemua (100m), Nina Herrera (1,500m), Eboni Johnson (triple jump), Adrienne Mosby (100m hurdles), Emily Perez (1,500m), Chenale Smith (high jump), Shartanae Swearengin (400m hurdles) and the 400m relay of Ernestine Cray, Alexus Daniels, Ehiemua, Chiugo Okonkwo, and Krystal Wynn.

Meanwhile, the men will send Nathan Collier (1,500m), Jonas Gutierrez (110m/400m hurdles), Joshua Smith (400m hurdles), Kerry Thompson (high jump) and the 400m relay of Christopher Hall, James Pailin, Kourt'ney Payne, Jumarcus Shelvin and Smith.

The Trinity Tigers Relays will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday with the hammer and the running events will start an hour later. Click here the event's full schedule and here for the start lists.

UTSA, led by individual titles by Cray (triple jump), Diaz (3,000m) and Herrera (1,500m), captured last weekend's Texas State Elite team championship with 139.5 points. The Roadrunners edged I-35 rival and meet host Texas State by one point and No. 16 Illinois and 21st-ranked UCLA tied for third with 119. UTSA also posted a half dozen second-place performances and a total of four bronze medals at the two-day meet

Thompson picked up the men's lone gold medal by finishing in a four-way tie for first in the high jump and the Roadrunners also posted a half dozen other podium finishes (three silver medals/three bronzes).
