TOWSON, Md. — Nate Leonard was named a second-team Captial One Academic All-American, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. The junior center is the Roadrunners' first-ever football honoree and the 17th overall selection in UTSA Athletics history.

Leonard, who maintains a 3.99 GPA in physical education, is the only Roadrunner to start all 34 games in program history and he chronicled this past season with a blog on after doing so last year for The Huffington Post.

The McKinney native was instrumental in the team's success this fall, as he helped UTSA post a 7-5 overall record, including a 6-2 mark in Conference USA play, and the Roadrunners tied a program record by winning their final five outings of the season.

The offense averaged 25.6 points, 417.8 total yards (175.4 rush/242.4 pass), 21.9 first downs and 32:24 possession time per contest and the 6-foot, 280-pounder led the offensive line with 70 knockdown blocks, including a season-high 10 against Rice (Oct. 12), in addition to grading out at 82 percent.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a 4.00 scale, have reached sophomore athletics and academic standings at his current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
