UTSA finishes 11th at SunTrust Gator Invitational
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Behind Taylor Newlin's 21st-place effort, the UTSA women's golf team finished 11th at the SunTrust Gator Invitational, which concluded Sunday at Mark Bostick Golf Course (par 70/6,002 yards).
Newlin carded a 75 in the final round to close out an 11-over-par 221 (72-74-75) and end up in a six-way tie for 21st, seven shots off the winning pace of four-over 214 set by Daniela Darquea of Miami. The senior from Frisco registered nine birdies during the 54-hole event in finishing as the top Roadrunner for the second time this season.
Fabiola Arriaga was two shots behind her fellow senior teammate after turning in a 223 (73-73-77) to tie for 32nd. Brogan Townend was 60th (78-77-78—233), Aimee Ponte tied for 73rd (86-76-77—239) and Chelsea Bretcher placed 78th (89-76-80—245).
UTSA posted a 307 in the final round after a 309 and 299 in the the first two, and the Roadrunners finished 11th with a 915, one stroke in front of Old Dominion in the 14-team field. No. 12 Arizona captured the team title with an 866 (294-287-285), followed by No. 37 Kent State (867), No. 30 Ohio State (875), No. 31 Miami (884), No. 32 Texas A&M (884), No. 29 Virginia (886), No. 42 Florida State (887), No. 16 Florida (892), No. 4 Oklahoma (893) and Penn State (895).
The Roadrunners will return to the course when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the LSU Tiger Classic from March 21-23.
