UTSA downs No. 25 St. Edward's, eighth-ranked Trinity in home-opening doubleheader on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA defeated St. Edward’s, 6-1, and Trinity, 4-3, in its home-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.

In the opener, the Roadrunners (2-3) took the doubles point for a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three contests against the Hilltoppers (0-2), who are ranked No. 25 in NCAA Division II.

Joel Rubio and Tomas Stillman made quick work of Patrick Clynes and Max Agoglia at No. 2 with a 6-0 shutout, while Kolby Kilgo and Boburjon Kamiljanov clinched the point with a 6-2 decision at No. 3 over Alex Buerro and Adrian Garza.

UTSA won on five of the six singles courts, including the clinching the match when Stillman finished off Clynes, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4. Diogo Casa held off Felix Bake at the top spot, 6-5 (4), 6-4, Yannick Junger dispatched Pedro Bronstrup at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4, Rubio swept Agoglia on the third court, 6-2, 6-3, and Fabian Brand picked up a win at No. 6 against Garza, 6-2, 5-6 (4), 1-0 (4).

The Roadrunners got out to a 4-0 start as part of a 4-3 win against Trinity (2-2), which is ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division III, in the afternoon match.

UTSA won at the top two doubles spots to grab that point. Casa and Junger defeated Paxton Deuel and Nicolas Moreno at No. 1, 6-3, while Rubio and Stillman improved to 4-0 on the year with a 6-2 victory over Jordan Mayer and Greg Haugen at the second position.
 
Rubio was the first winner in singles competition with a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Haugen at No. 3, while Junger put the Roadrunners up 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 sweep of Aaron Skinner at No. 2. Stillman clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-5 (2) win against Moreno on the fourth court.

The Roadrunners return to action against Samford (1-2) next Friday, Feb. 14, in Birmingham, Ala.
