UTSA wins first game of season against UT Arlington, 74-56
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA picked up its first win of the season by downing UT Arlington, 74-56, on Sunday at the Convocation Center.
Kamra King led UTSA (1-2) in scoring for the second consecutive game with 17 points. The Norman, Okla., native connected on 3-of-5 field goal attempts and was 10-for-12 from the free-throw line. Niaga Mitchell-Cole and Alana Heard each tallied nine points in a balanced Roadrunners attack and Akunna Elonu pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Laila Suleiman scored a game-high 20 points and Briana Walker added a dozen and seven rebounds for the Mavericks (0-4).
UTSA set the pace from the start with a 16-0 first-half run to take a 21-5 advantage. Five different players scored in the decisive stretch with Miki Turner pouring in six points to lead the charge.
The Roadrunners maintained the double-digit lead the rest of the game by using a mix of full-court defensive pressures to force UT Arlington into 26 turnovers and a 35-percent field goal percentage.
UTSA’s 26 free throws equaled the amount attempted by the Mavericks in a game that saw each team commit 27 fouls.
The Roadrunners will return to action later this week at the Athletes in Action Classic in Waco. UTSA will open tournament play at 5 p.m. on Thursday against Northwestern State (2-0).
