SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will send three players to compete at Saturday's Texas State Play Date in San Marcos.
Daniela Garcia-Diaz, Nicole Karaklis and Alena Shichkova will represent the Roadrunners against players from Prairie View A&M, Texas Pan-American and the host Bobcats.
The tournament will consist of each player playing one doubles match and two singles matches. Doubles contests will consist of one set to six points with tiebreaker at five-all and one-ad scoring, while singles play will be the best two out of three sets with each going to six points with tiebreakers at five-all.
Karaklis advanced to the semifinals of the consolation singles draw to lead UTSA at last weekend's USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships.
After dropping her opening match of the tournament last Thursday, the sophomore transfer from Incarnate Word reeled off four consecutive victories before falling to UT Arlington's Angeles De Los Rios in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). Karaklis defeated Texas State's Eva Dench in three sets (5-6 , 6-5 , 10-3) before going the distance with Incarnate Word's Jennifer Betancourt (4-6, 6-0, 10-8). She advanced to the semifinals due to a pair of injuries, first to TCU's Monika Sirilova (withdrew) followed by UT Arlington's Christine Foote (4-3, retired).
