Charlotte drops UTSA on Friday night, 2-0
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte netted a pair of second-half goals to hand the UTSA its first Conference USA defeat on Friday night at Transamerica Field.
Goalie Bubba Makela, the league’s reigning Defensive Player of the Week, tallied three saves and allowed her first goals since the second half of UTSA’s setback at Texas on Sept. 22. Meanwhile, Alexis Alaniz and Kauwela Neal had two shots apiece for the Roadrunners, who dropped to 2-9-1 overall and 1-1-1 in C-USA action.
Amanda Jones helped lead the way for the 49ers (7-4, 2-1 C-USA) with a goal and five shots, while Rebecca Beatty scored her first winner of the season. Netminder Annika McHenry made four saves and improved to 2-1 on the season with her first shutout.
Both defenses played well early, as the teams combined for just seven shots in the first half and each goalie stopped the only attempt that came their way.
However, Beatty broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the 63rd minute that was set up by Maddie Kiebel. Beatty’s shot, which was the first goal against the UTSA defense in 292 minutes, snuck just inside the left post and gave the home squad a 1-0 lead.
That proved to be enough cushion for McHenry, who made three of her four saves in the second half.
Charlotte put the game out of reach in the 71st minute on Jones’ fourth goal of the season and the 49ers defense finished off the shutout with 19 scoreless minutes.
The Roadrunners will be back in action on Sunday in a 12 p.m. (CT) matchup at Old Dominion (1-8-1, 1-2 C-USA).
